How to Organize a Utility Closet in One Afternoon

Placeholder image

Every home has one: the closet where brooms lean against each other, cleaning bottles crowd the floor and something falls out every time you open the door. A utility closet does not need to be big to work well. It needs a plan. Here is one you can finish in an afternoon.

Step 1: Empty it completely

Take everything out. It is the only way to see what you actually have. As you go, sort items into three groups: keep, replace and let go. Dried-out sponges, empty bottles and duplicate tools can leave now.

Step 2: Get long handles off the floor

Brooms, mops and dusters take up the most room and cause the most chaos. Store them upright on the wall, handles held in place, so they stop sliding into each other and the floor space underneath is free again. This one change usually makes the biggest visible difference.

Step 3: Group by task

Put items that are used together in the same place: floor care in one zone, kitchen cleaning in another, laundry supplies in a third. A small caddy or bin per zone means you can grab everything for one job and carry it to where you need it.

Step 4: Put the everyday items at eye level

The things you reach for every day belong between your shoulders and your knees. Seasonal or backup supplies can go on the highest shelf. If you have to move something to reach something else, the layout needs another look.

Keep it that way

  • Return each tool to its spot after use.
  • Do a five-minute check once a month and remove anything that is empty or broken.
  • Keep a short list on the inside of the door for supplies running low.

Tip: Start by getting long-handled tools off the floor with a simple wall-mounted holder.
